Brush up on your figure drawing skills. Artist Stan Prokopenko (a.k.a. Proko) has a series of drawing tutorials that are worth checking out. He has a fun style of teaching that is easy to understand and will keep you engaged in the lesson.

Here's a drawing I did recently on the universal subject of motherly love. At first I wanted to do another Madonna and Child image (can't get enough of them!) but then I thought of making a similar image with less religious tone. So here goes.

Thomas Tallis - Inspiration

Commissioned pen and ink portrait of Thomas Tallis, great English Renaissance composer of Catholic and Anglican religious music. I wanted to express a moment of inspiration, that moment when you're subcreating something and suddenly the thing that works comes to you like grace. And, the idea of expressing that was what came to me like that as I worked on this piece.

As he did live, so also did he die,
In mild and quiet sort (O happy man!)
To God full oft for mercy did he cry,
Wherefore he lives, let death do what he can.

Another St. Peter

In my last post of an image of St. Peter I was reminded by a member of this blog of the necessity of staying true to tradition as to the 'iconography' of the saints. St. Peter is traditionally shown as having a roundish (white) beard and curly hair so I did this one.

I did this in my figure drawing class. The art school I attend is in general pretty deconstructionist, but I'm lucky to have a life drawing teacher who emphasizes narrative meaning, and doesn't scoff at Christian art.

Hello

I'm Mary, a university student who wants to be a professional illustrator someday. I've watched Smallpax for years, but never got up the nerve to ask to join. I submitted some art for the Gilbert magazine Call for Artists below, and at that Ted was kind enough to issue me an invitation. This picture is one of the ones I submitted.

It's very exciting to be here. I hope I will do myself credit. ^_^

Experimental: Scratch Drawing

I have been experimenting with scratch drawings. This is my first attempt, a scratch drawing on a 3.5" x 5" piece of Claybord that I coated with India ink.

It is after Velazquez's painting of the same subject. That painting is my favorite depiction to use when I wish to think about the Crucifixion, because it is very simple, reverent, and unemotional.
