Catholic Icons

Hi, everyone! I am new at the Catholic Illustrators Guild and happy to be here. I am an iconography apprentice learning to write Catholic icons in the Russian-Byzantine tradition. The recessed and panel icons I have completed so far can be seen at my site Created Beauty. Here are two of the icons I recently finished:

The icons are all written using natural pigments with water-based egg tempera on wood covered with linen and traditional gesso, together with 23.5 kt gold leaf and/or silver leaf burnished by hand. Check out my site and please do not hesitate to get in touch at createdbeautyicons@gmail.com should you have any questions.

Thanks, enjoy!

Epiphany coloring page, colored

Merry Christmas as we come to the end of this year! This year, for me, has been dominated by the project of the Liturgical Calendar Coloring Book, drawing pages for every single saint's day. Now it's complete I've started coloring some of the pages. I colored this one with acrylic wash, ink, and the classic coloring book medium, Crayola crayons; and used the picture for my Christmas cards this year.

May you all have a blessed New Year!

Glorious Mysteries coloring pages

As part of my ongoing project of a coloring book of the entire Liturgical Calendar, I've drawn coloring pages of the five Glorious Mysteries. So I decided to make them available as a set, along with a set of the Luminous Mysteries that I did earlier. Check out this page on my blog if you're interested.

Elevation

This is my Christmas card picture for this year, and I also tried to enter it in that Catholic Digest contest back at the time, but the email address didn't seem to be working.

Merry Christmas!

Our Lady of America

Dear my American friends,

When you vote on the 6th of November, keep in mind your identities as children of Light and your duties to bear His Truth and Love. Our Lady of America, pray for us!

Holy Face of Mary

A commissioned small oil painting, based on an image "drawn by an Italian mystic" in the Pieta Prayer Book.

It frustrated me that the book does not name this mystic, or give any other information, and I couldn't find the image anywhere else! It is lovely, though, and was a challenge to interpret.

The Annunciation

I'm working on a series of paintings of the Holy Rosary. The Annunciation is the first Joyful Mystery. Thank you for allowing me to participate in your Catholic Illustrators Guild. Many of the drawings and illustrations here are beautiful.

Queen of Heaven - sketch page

Update (3/22/11):  Here is a small painted head study done from the sketch.  To speed up the process, I painted my first layers in acrylic and then came back over it in oils for the final coat.  I've heard this is not wise since over time (hundreds of years) the oil may flake off, being too thin.

I pulled out the ole 9B pencil for this sketch.  Kinda scary at first when you see those dark pencil marks being put on the page, but I needed the contrast for the skin tones.

Sacred Heart/Immacualte Heart

I actually posted these on my blog on the appropriate days, but I think you are right J.R. I was remiss not to post them here. I think most Smallpaxers have seen them from previous posts. At any rate these are more contemporary takes on traditional imagery.

East meets West in the Italian Renaissance

There is a great article on the Blog "Suffering with Joy" about this painting, "Madonna with Child Clothed with Sunlight." Ms. Schoeneberger talks about not oly the symbolism in this painting but combination of eastern and western stles that produced this stunning piece.

The Annunciation

Above is an unused sketch for a piece I am currently working on.  I was hesitant to share this since the painting is still in it's earliest stages, but it may be a few months before completion.  The final will be in oil.

Month of Mary

After living in Italy for some years in the 1970's I got used to seeing devotion in churches. It wasn't uncommon to see pilgrims like this, prostrate and praying by an altar dedicated to Our Lady. Usually at shrines and places of pilgrimage. It's not often in the USA to see such outward acts. Since it is May the month of Mary, I wanted to post something in her honor. I found this 20 year old oil sketch I had done on canvas paper. It is not the best composition and I'll be the first to admit that.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace

I have wanted to try and do an illustration of Mary for quite awhile, so finally got down to it tonight!
