Sketchbook Saturday/Lent

As my Lenten observance this year I hope to complete an icon of the crucifix that I have been meditating on for a while. This is a sketch of the corpus. The inspiration is from some of the medieval crucifix icons such as "San Damiano" in which Christ is portrayed as victorious over death and calling all of us to Him. "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself." John 12:32

That's a great idea Lawrence. For the past few years I've been meaning to try my hand at making a Crucifix with clay and wood... but it hasn't come to anything. Please keep posting your progress... maybe it will spur me on to finally doing mine!

Oh, nice! I particularly like how you've drawn the cloth. The small head gives him stature and command but it might be a touch too small... or maybe it could use more neck.

I hate to keep picking on your anatomy, but I'm trying to give more "helpful" crits reather than just "way to go!" And your sense of anatomy is actually really good. So... I crit because I care.

Thank Ben I appreciate your help. There is a reason the head may look small. In an effort to portray a strong image of jesus I used a more "heroic" approach to the figure. In addition to more muscular limbs this also means a larger ribcage than a normal or even an idealized adult might have. The figure height is still 8-8.5 heads so it is not really a small head but the large chest gives that impression. I'll try elarging it just a bit.

Lawrence,
That is really, really great. Unlike Ben, I don't know enough to give criticisms. I think it's beautiful!
