Recycling Textbooks

Waaaay back in high school I bought a Russian textbook at a used bookstore. I never really got around to reading through it, but it kept sitting on the bookshelf.

Lately I've been using the pages from it to create these portraits on. I sketch out a rough idea of the form, gesso over that a bit, then add colored pencil and watercolor on top. The pages are pretty thin and can't take too much unfortunately, but they're fun to work on.

Looks cool.

I saw a portrait of Shakespeare once that was done in this method on top of a page from his plays. It'd be fun to do a series of author pics like that.

Thanks!

The textbook was an intro. to Russian course from the '60's, so it has all these cool maps of the USSR in it. I was homeschooled so whenever I found books like that I snagged them, but with that one I never really got around to reading it sadly.
