Inspiration: J.R.R. Tolkien

This website brings together countless sketches and illustrations by Tolkien. Never very confident about his own skill as an artist. Tolkien nevertheless illustrated The Hobbit, as well as providing dust-jacket designs for The Lord of the Rings. As you can see from the collection here, though he wasn't a "polished" illustrator, he had a charming style and a very good sense of color and design.

I have decided there are five experiences of my childhood that are the formative spiritual pinnacles. 3-and-a-half of them are visual/artistic. One of them is reading "The Hobbit" at ten or eleven, 1961 or 1962. That's the half visual one. It's indefensible (He's really not THAT good), but those illustrations remain among my very favorite images ever, especially Mirkwood and The Misty Mountains Looking West from the Eyrie...

This definately is inspiration! I wonder if he sketched this with some actual scene as his model or simply from his imagination?

Thanks so much Herried.

Thanks for link! My Hobbit has few illustrations, and my LotR only the door. These are great.
