Christ the Teacher

I took a week-long seminar in icon writing this past week in Dallas TX. Our teacher Fr. Elias led about 20 students through all the steps of the icon writing process. Many people refer to "writing" icons as opposed to "painting" them. I found icons quite difficult since they are more stylized and less realistic looking - also I have never been one to keep inside of lines and use smooth areas of color. But the challenge was a good one and it is so nice to have somthing beautiful and holy to share with my family and friends now that I am home. There is quite alot of symbolism in this picture but I won't go into all of it now. The prayer around the border is the 'Our Father' in Latin. If you have questions though please feel free to ask.

That is AWESOME Michaela!!!! I would love to hear about more of the symbolism. Thanks to an exhibit on the Vatican that was near us about a year and a half ago I recognize a few things. The hand positioning and the colors of the robes (the humanity over the divinity). But I think symbolism is very cool, and I would love to hear more of it.

Michaela,

Looks like you used guilding and everything! Good show! Was this using egg tempera? Also, I'm thinking the style is more Russian than Byzantine, yes? In any event, a very respectable piece of work...bravo!

Nicely done. Icons are difficult for us Westerners because we think and experience the world in totally different ways than Easterners.

It's so majestic and beautiful with the rich colors and authentic style. Of I'm not biased, eventhough I have very little artistic expertise. Love, Dad
