I agree. It's a nice color study. I haven't seen the original, but I might have used a less saturated color for the crosses (less red/umber pigment and a little more grey).
I tried adding more detail (such as faces) but they just made it worse so I left it as is. (:

I really like how even though it is not detailed it looks realistic ... you could just leave it like that and call it impressionism =) Very nice!

I agree, I often use over-bright colors in acrylics... I'm still working on that.
