Click on the image above for a better look. This version of the picture was supposed to ramp up the joy and excitement of the occasion. Most pictures of Pentecost have a prayerful calm about them -especially the Gustav Dore pictures I was using for reference. So I was a little nervous about going overboard with this one.

I like it, I just had never thought of Pentecost in that way. If I had to quibble with anything I guess it would be the composition/format. The horizontal frame really sucks the energy out of the figures. Is this for a double page spread? Have you thought of maybe bringing the figures on the ends closer to the viewer and fill up more of the frame top to bottom? Just something to break up that line that goes straight across from one side to the other. I should in fairness add that my "LOVELY" wife disagrees with me, she thinks it conveys a great sense of community.
Overall I do like it very much, nice job.
I this this is great... lots of energy in this one. I like Lawrence's idea about bringing the outer figures closer to you (so they are bigger) it would look like you were in the midst of them. But it works as is, esp considering that there will be text in the space above them.

I like it. The last picture was good too (I liked the colors), but somehow a Pentecost picture doesn't seem complete without Our Lady. I like the expression you've given her, a sublime joy. It's a lovely compliment to the boisterous joy of the fishermen!
It's definitely tough working around text/layout constraints, so looking at this I was thinking "Wow!" that it was able to stand on it's own composition-wise without the text. Now that's a challenge!
I'm wondering if maybe the intensity of the flames could be a bit stronger? They seem a little weak in comparison to the strength of the rest of the image, although it might be an issue of my monitor...

Abigail, Those flames were one of my few forays into using PS to color linework. Maybe a touch too light, but when the text is right above the image it might work as a buffer between image and text. ...or not.
I don't mind the jubilation, (hey, it's the first catholic charismatic experience) but to me what seems a bit off is that the rays of the holy spirit seem to be behind them, rather than above them. And no dove?
I do love the expression the face of the one with the long beard. Is it St. Peter? It's like the holy spirit snuck up on him and caught him by surprise just when he was getting ready to say something.
Could the flames for the apostles on the right foreground be lower? Otherwise the guy in the blue looks a bit like he's juggling fire.
Yeah, but... juggling fire is a GREAT thing to do!
