Update (3/22/11): Here is a small painted head study done from the sketch. To speed up the process, I painted my first layers in acrylic and then came back over it in oils for the final coat. I've heard this is not wise since over time (hundreds of years) the oil may flake off, being too thin.

I pulled out the ole 9B pencil for this sketch. Kinda scary at first when you see those dark pencil marks being put on the page, but I needed the contrast for the skin tones.
Wow! That's really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteExcellent work! The light coming from behind the veil is the perfect touch.
ReplyDeleteLovely! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteHer face has a delicate realness that reminds me a little of Bouguereau--a cross between his Madonnas and little shepherdesses and beggars, because his Madonnas never look right at you (always looking up, or to the side, or with closed eyes), and the young girls almost always do.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!Nice expression. She looks alive.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane. Bouguereau and other Nineteenth Century French artists have made an impression on me.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul and Sophie
Will you be selling this image? It is really striking. Our classroom is dedicated to the Mary Queen of Heaven, and I would like to have a beautiful image to which our children could relate. This one is so beautiful and youthful, and I like how she is looking right at us!
